Building Evacuation Procedures
Document Quick Links:
Fire Drills
- Occupational and Environmental Safety Services sends advance notice of drills to department heads.
- Departments should notify floor monitors and all faculty.
- At the time of drills, Occupational and Environmental Safety Services will sound the building alarm.
- Department personnel should take monitoring and security positions. Monitors will make occupants leave the building, make sure areas are evacuated, and transverse assigned areas to ensure persons are not remaining in spaces which will permit concealment.
- Every means possible should be used to ensure rapid evacuation of the building. Occupants should not be permitted to "gravitate" toward usual entrances. Ground floor exits are to be cleared quickly with all persons moving at least 25 feet from the building. When evacuating the building, use stairs - do not use elevators.
When A Fire Is Known or Suspected
- The building alarm should be sounded immediately.
- The area monitor should announce that all persons must evacuate the building. Use stairs - do not use elevators.
- Call University Police at 645-2222 to give location of fire and report what is burning.
- Do not attempt to extinguish the fire unless you have received specialized training from Occupational and Environmental Safety Services.
Bomb Threats
Notify University Police (645-2222), giving all details of threat.
University Police will evaluate the threat on the basis of all available details and decide whether or not to evacuate the building.
- If University Police recommends evacuation, they will notify the department head or building manager of the threatened structure, and close the building.
- The department head, building manager, or University Police Officer will announce to all persons in the structure that there has been a bomb threat, and the structure is to be evacuated. Patrolmen and building evacuation monitors will make certain all persons are warned to leave the building.
- Building occupants should assist in securing the building and making cursory inspection for a destructive device (and inform a University Police Officer if anything unusual is noticed). Staff members should close windows and lock doors when leaving their areas.
3. Concurrently with the above activities, University Police will begin procedures to locate any destructive device.
