Emergency Response
University Police is the first to respond to all medical, fire and criminal emergencies on campus. Members of the academic community and visitors to the campus are encouraged to report crimes or other emergencies to the department's dispatcher by dialing 645-2222 from any campus phone, or *2222 from on campus pay phones.
Criminal Investigation
University Police is responsible for the entire investigative process. This process includes taking the initial crime report and statements, crime scene processing, and the identification and apprehension of suspects, which culminates in the judicial system. University Police's Investigations Unit is staffed by five fulltime detectives, each of whom handles a caseload of crimes against persons such as sexual assaults, batteries, and robberies, along with property crimes such as burglary, auto theft and fraud.
Crime Prevention and Community Policing
Under community policing, University Police officers are assigned to patrol designated areas of campus and to develop a relationship with the various groups residing or working in these areas. Our officers are willing to meet with groups to define problems, develop strategies to maintain a safe environment, and conduct special programs.

Orientations
University Police Officers give presentations on crime prevention at various University at Buffalo orientations, including: New Student Orientations; Graduate School Orientations; Professional School Orientations; International Student Orientations; Transfer Student Orientations: Freshman-Parent Orientations; and New Employee Orientations.
Operation Identification/Book I.D.
Each student, faculty and staff member requesting this service receives an Operation I.D. number and is loaned free of charge an electric engraver for marking valuables, an Operation I.D. log, and warning decals to be placed at the entrance to his/her room, office, or home after valuables have been engraved. The Operation I.D. number clearly identifies the owner, and the program works because it takes the profit out of crime and increases the criminal's risk of being caught.
Safety Fairs and Information Tables
University Police Officers participate in Safety Fairs and staff information tables to promote crime prevention, home security and personal safety. They educate students, faculty and staff about steps they can take to protect their homes, property, and selves.
Self-Defense Workshops
Along with conducting Self-Defense workshops, University Police Officers also conduct Self-Defense Classes through the Division of Athletics.
Lost and Found
University Police Department operates a lost and found service. Lost or found items can be recovered/turned in at Bissell Hall on the North Campus.
Women's Safety and Sexual Assault Prevention Programs
The University Police Department conducts programs dealing with the issues of Women's Safety, Date and Acquaintance Rape and Sexual Assault Prevention.
Safety Escorts, Door Locking and Night Host Programs
The University Police Department conducts Night Host and Door Locking programs in the Residence Halls and the Medical School. The Department also offers a University Police Aide Escort Program.
